i.e.? e.g.? 傻傻分不清楚?

很多人在英文論文或是作文寫作時，不喜歡用像是for example 或是for instance 之類來作例證開頭，反而喜歡用縮寫讓篇幅看起來簡潔，但論舉例縮寫，最常見的就是i.e.和e.g.，這兩個又有甚麼差異呢？

i.e. 是拉丁文id est的縮寫，翻譯作為「那就是說」、「換句話說」的意思，用來補述或是闡述前面已經提及過的言論。
e.g. 則是拉丁文exempli gratia的縮寫，意思是「為了舉例」，就是for example的意思。e.g. 的用法就是在一段敘述後給出舉例。

我們來看看實際的舉例吧

•　i.e. 的用法舉例
“ I love extreme sports, i.e., a sport that is perceived as involving a high degree of risk, such as bungee jumping or snowboarding.”
我熱愛極限運動，（甚麼是極限運動？）一種被認為具有高風險的運動，像是高空彈跳或是單板滑雪。
i.e.在這裡緊跟在要換句話說或是多做解釋補充的名詞或句子後面，例如在上述這句話中，i.e.就用來補充解釋「極限運動」的意思。

•　e.g. 的用法舉例
“ I love extreme sports, e.g., scuba diving, parasailing, and bungee jumping.”
我熱愛極限運動，（舉例極限運動有哪些）例如水肺潛水，滑翔傘和高空彈跳。

e.g.在這裡的用法就是舉出明確實例，用法就像上一句的such as，另外要特別注意的是“e.g.” 和 “etc.” 不能在同一個句子出現。

etc.它是 etcetera 的縮寫，意思是“…等等”，相當於“and so on”，在有很多舉不完的類似例子結尾常常出現，例如 “ I love extreme sports, such as bungee jumping, snowboarding, parasailing, etc. ”

那除了i.e. 跟e.g.以外，還有這些例證用字可以用：

• for example 舉例
Offices can easily become more environmentally-friendly by, for example, using recycled paper.
舉手之勞就可以使辦公室更加環保，例如，使用再生紙。

• for instance 例如
In the electronics industry, for instance, 5,000 jobs are being lost.
例如，電子業就會失去5000份工作。

• that is 或者更明確的說
Our friends, that is to say our son's friends, will meet us at the airport.

• namely 意即；也就是說
We need to get more teachers into the classrooms where they're most needed, namely in high poverty areas.
我們要讓更多教師到最需要他們的課堂中去，也就是極度貧困地區的課堂。

• such as 比如
That money is to cover costs such as travel and accommodation.
那筆錢是用來支付交通費和住宿費的。

• in other words 換句話說
He was economical with the truth - in other words, he was lying.
他沒說多少實話——換言之，他在撒謊。
